Erik Blandford,
It is always sad to discover that the hard drive on your Mac is running out of free space. All of a sudden the machine's hard drive signals about space shortage. But certainly, you need not consider buying a new one since you can easily solve the problem by sweeping off the junk stuff from the hard drive. And there is more than one method to do so. We offer you a guidance how to clear the hard drive space using either the manual technique or a specialized commercial cleaner app.
Cleaning the junk manually
To turn off iCloud Drive entirely, deselect iCloud Drive. If you're using macOS Mojave or earlier, choose Apple menu System Preferences, click iCloud, then click Options next to iCloud Drive. Store in iCloud turns on the Desktop & Documents Folders and Optimize Mac Storage settings. In Photos, choose Photos Preferences, then click iCloud. Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible. You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER! With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space. If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
The least costly way is, as usual, the manual way. It is preferable if you have time and a strong will to immerse into the depth of your hard drive to search for items to delete. But if the junk on your computer is of varied nature and requires a thorough removal procedure, then maybe using a commercial cleaner app would be better. But let us first consider all important points on the manual removal.
Unneeded files and folders
It will probably make the work easier if you begin with classifying the stuff that may be found unnecessary and so should be removed.
Such a classification gives the following categories:
- Games that you no longer play (demos and shareware)
- QuickTime videos like movie trailers that have long since became outdated
- Temporary files of any kind
- Log files that are no longer actual
- Old ZIP and StuffIt archives
- Music and videos that no longer appeal to you
All the above files are not so difficult to delete off your drive. Alternatively, you can move some of them to an external storage device like the external hard drive.
But removing installed apps often requires a different approach. Sometimes, it is sufficient just to delete the application folder and that's all. There are no leftovers anywhere on your hard drive and the free space has increased. But quite often applications (like for example Microsoft Office and Photoshop) install their files (associated files) in different folders so you have to search for them. For that purpose, you may use Search text box in the Finder window. To avoid the procedure, in such cases, useful info can be found in readme files or other documentation. Check them and probably you will find out how to uninstall the whole application safely and quickly.
Another assistant for deleting apps bought from App Store is a Launchpad. Games to play on mac. From its display, you can click and hold down the icon until it wiggles, then clicks the X to delete the application.
Certainly, if you still need files in the old application's folder, don't forget to move them elsewhere before you delete the folder.
Also, don't forget that deleted files are actually removed from the hard drive only when the Trash is emptied (and certainly the hard drive space will not be reclaimed until that moment). In this context, it is a good advice not to hurry up with deleting your files permanently by emptying the Trash. It is wiser to wait sometime. And if you realize that you deleted a file that you need, you can just restore it from the Trash.
